Rockville
is one of Maryland's largest cities and is the county seat
of Montgomery County. It occupies 13.03 square miles within
the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area and is located 12
miles northwest of the nation's capital. A major portion
of the prestigious I-270 corridor is within the City's corporate
limits.
Rockville is a residential community and an employment center. The City of Rockville offers a wide variety of real estate and housing styles, prices, sizes, and neighborhoods from mid-rise condominiums to Victorian homes, from contemporary models to the more traditional. Rockville's 2000 census population is 47,388 with an estimated employment base of 48,900 jobs. There are 17,247 households in Rockville, with an average of 2.65 persons per household. The City government is responsible
for water and sewer, parks and recreation, police and firefighters,
libraries, and more. Part of Rockville is located inside
the City limits, the
remainder is governed by Montgomery
County. The County covers 495.5 square miles with a population
of 931,000. Over 56,000 squares miles are dedicated to parkland
and open space. In fact, the DC Metro area has the greatest
amount of public park space of any major metropolitan area
in the nation.
Homeownership is far above the national average
at 77.3% . Countywide, the average sale price of a single
family home in 2003 was $362,997. an increase of over 13%
from 2002. The average 2 bedroom apartment rents for $1,162.
Our population is highly educated with 66% of adults over
age 25 holding a Bachelors degree or higher and 34% with
a graduate or professional degree. The median income is $79,115.
Contrary to popular belief, most residents of Montgomery
County work in the County (58.8%) while only 23.1% commute
into DC. Another myth shattered, only 21.7% are government
employees (including local and State government as well as
Federal).
Rockville is a highly desirable place to purchase
real estate and live due to its central location, excellent
public transportation system, employment centers, schools,
parks, recreation, and public facilities. It is home to Montgomery
College (a 2 year community college), several biotech and
genetics research companies and other major employers including:
Westat Inc., Aspen Systems Corp, Mid Atlantic Medical Services,
Thompson Publishing, Hewlett Packard Company, Celera Genomics,
Northrup-Grumman, BAE Systems, McKesson HBOC, and Shire Pharmaceuticals.
The Town Center is undergoing a major redevelopment project
encompassing shopping, office and residential space. Yet
Rockville retains the charm of its historic neighborhoods
and public buildings. Isn’t it time you moved and made
Rockville your new home?
