Rockville is one of Maryland's largest cities and is the county seat of Montgomery County. It occupies 13.03 square miles within the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area and is located 12 miles northwest of the nation's capital. A major portion of the prestigious I-270 corridor is within the City's corporate limits.

The City government is responsible for water and sewer, parks and recreation, police and firefighters, libraries, and more. Part of Rockville is located inside the City limits, the

remainder is governed by Montgomery County. The County covers 495.5 square miles with a population of 931,000. Over 56,000 squares miles are dedicated to parkland and open space. In fact, the DC Metro area has the greatest amount of public park space of any major metropolitan area in the nation.

Homeownership is far above the national average at 77.3% . Countywide, the average sale price of a single family home in 2003 was $362,997. an increase of over 13% from 2002. The average 2 bedroom apartment rents for $1,162. Our population is highly educated with 66% of adults over age 25 holding a Bachelors degree or higher and 34% with a graduate or professional degree. The median income is $79,115. Contrary to popular belief, most residents of Montgomery County work in the County (58.8%) while only 23.1% commute into DC. Another myth shattered, only 21.7% are government employees (including local and State government as well as Federal).

Rockville is a highly desirable place to purchase real estate and live due to its central location, excellent public transportation system, employment centers, schools, parks, recreation, and public facilities. It is home to Montgomery College (a 2 year community college), several biotech and genetics research companies and other major employers including: Westat Inc., Aspen Systems Corp, Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Thompson Publishing, Hewlett Packard Company, Celera Genomics, Northrup-Grumman, BAE Systems, McKesson HBOC, and Shire Pharmaceuticals.
